The shop supervisor directs the daily activities of shop floor hourly employees in the tasks of bearing machining, assembly, and inspection. Must control quality/safety/efficiency issues in their area of responsibility by motivating, mentoring and monitoring employees and respond to individual needs.  This person must plan, schedule and administer their individual area to meet confines of a pre-planned budget and predetermined schedules.  Works closely with other functional areas of the shop including the Fabrication, Rotor, and Assembly and Test areas.


  • Executes the scheduled shop workload as controlled by customer contract requirements.
  • Assures that work is performed in accordance with the specifications and procedures defined in Elliott's Quality Manual.
  • Advises engineering of any customer product non-conformance detected in the manufacturing process.
  • Assigns the scheduled work and activity on a daily basis to qualified and capable personnel.
  • Assures provided work instructions are complete and understood.
  • Assures materials, tooling and supplies for the job are available to the assigned personnel.
  • Provides consultation and assists in resolving unforeseen problems during manufacturing.
  • Reviews work assignments for completion and approves completed assignments.
  • Orders tools and supplies required for specific jobs.
  • Assists with production scheduling, participates in daily/weekly production meetings when required and recommends strategies to correct deviations from schedule.
  • Implements, supervises and holds responsibility for good housekeeping activities, safe work practices, effective and efficient operation using established policies and procedures.
  • Participates in both formal and informal audits of work practices, Quality, Statutory, HSE, expenses and operating efficiency. Takes corrective actions as required.
  • Administers personnel functions in the department including hiring, training, discipline and discharge.
  • Actively participates and takes a leadership role in health, safety, environment and quality initiatives.
  • Establishes and maintains discipline, effective and productive work habits in the department.
  • Communicates effectively to schedule work, shipping and material handling with other departments and shifts.
  • Assists with safety and environmental audits, customer inspection visits and training activities.
  • Maintains a high standard of personal conduct and morale in the department.
  • Supports satisfactory work progress by addressing employee technical issues and information requests promptly as well as monitoring all activity throughout the department.
  • Maintains a high degree of visibility throughout the day.
  • Promotes and adheres to company policies.
  • Performs additional activities as assigned by management.
  • Overall administration of the shop floor for day-to-day function.
  • Supports Total Production Maintenance across the shop floor to manage the targeted up-time of machines.



  • Creates monitoring procedures to control scrap & rework costs. Manage coordinated efforts to eliminate the root cause of the quality problem and employee recommendations.
  • Assists Shop Engineering in solving quality/manufacturing/design problems. Monitors and controls ISO 9000 requirements in all areas of responsibility.
  • Ensures machine tools are properly maintained by adhering to TPM schedule.
  • Ensures instruments available in shop floor and Inspection areas are calibrated and controlled.
  • Ensures certified slings, cranes, forklift etc. are in use in the shop floor.
  • Ensures personnel are correctly trained and qualified for work activities.
  • Ensures Quality documentation is kept up to date.



  • Initiates methods to control efficiency levels of machining operations. Takes necessary action to insure that products are produced at the lowest possible cost and in the shortest lead-time with the highest quality. Initiates methods to monitor and control product costs of critical path component parts.
  • Participates in development of plant layout changes for area of responsibility.
  • Participates & encourage KAIZEN implementations in the shop floor to eliminate/reduce wastes.
  • Achieves targets for utilization and absorption by managing operators.
  • Ensures financial sign-off limits are adhered to for purchases.
  • Supports shop production needs.



  • Administers a program of good housekeeping in all areas of responsibility, resolves Safety issues and fosters a safe work environment. Ensures all the work areas have Job Hazard analysis and risk assessment done and appropriate actions are implemented.
  • Ensures shop floor personnel operate within the Health & Safety procedures as set out in the Health and Safety Manual, including but not limited to using appropriate PPE's, lock out tag out procedures ,fire extinguishers and fire evacuation systems.
  • Ensures that all accidents/incidents are reported and investigated as required.
  • Facilitates and supports H&S audits.



  • Identifies shop training needs and establishes the annual training & development program.
  • Implements the training & development program with the support of HR.
  • Maintains staffing levels, overtime and shift patterns in line with forecasts. Prepares monthly reports.
  • Conducts hiring, training & development, discipline, discharge and performance appraisals of personnel.
  • Participates in disciplinary procedures with personnel.



  • Devises motivational and developmental procedures for all subordinates to perform their assigned duties to the best of their abilities in a manner consistent with company goals.
  • Attends and contributes in the production meetings.
  • Supports other Elliott groups where possible.
  • Supports systems personnel in developing high quality repairs.
  • Supports department manager and internal customers in meeting customer deliveries.


  • High school diploma or equivalent and advanced technical training in the field of technical manufacturing.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of work experience in part manufacturing, service or repair environment.
  • Detailed working knowledge of shop practices, repair, safety, personnel and administrative procedures.
  • Schedule management ability to make decisions and direct assigned personnel to perform required assignments.
  • Manufacturing production experience is required. Experience and knowledge of manual & CNC machining, CNC programming, assembly, welding and heat treatment is desirable.
  • A solid understanding and interpretation of engineered drawings.
  • Excellent supervisory and communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem solving skills.
