  • Overview

    This is an entry level engineer who will assist in planning, testing or coordinating testing, and reporting for R&D projects.  Will assist production personnel with laboratory work as needed.   Will be assigned to small projects of low complexity as well as portion(s) of large projects.   May choose an approach or procedure for addressing a work task, under guidance.   Receives regular, direct supervision.

     

    Travel is estimated at up to 25%, domestic and international.

    Responsibilities

    • Assists in the upkeep of the lab, including hygiene, routine maintenance, inventory, and calibration.
    • Coordinates outsourced testing.
    • Performs laboratory testing for projects and as needed, for production support.
    • Works to maintain schedule and budget on assigned projects.
    • Assists in the design and construction of new test apparatus as needed.
    • Push to continuously improve knowledge and technical capabilities of oneself and the company.

    Communication / Contacts:

     

    • Interacts with others using basic courtesy and a straightforward exchange of information.
    • Clear and comprehensive oral and written communications skills are important.
    • Occasional technical papers and presentations are expected.
    • The ability to distill technical information to the level of the intended audience is important, as interactions will be with others in positions ranging from engineers to executives to shop floor workers.
    • Contact directly with customers will occur and the ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner is of the utmost importance.

     

    Qualifications

    • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, or similar discipline is preferred.  Other disciplines such as Welding Engineering and Mechanical Engineering may also be considered.
    • 0-2 years of experience.
    • Basic understanding of the operation of typical metallurgical laboratory equipment and processes; hands on experience is ideal.
    • Creative problem solving is essential.
    • Hands-on experience with welding and/or machining is helpful.
    • Should have good knowledge of steels as this is the most frequently utilized, but will also encounter nonferrous materials and nonmetals as well.
    • Experience performing testing to applicable ASTM, ISO, or other industry specifications is useful.
    • Familiarity with standard operational processes in defined area of work.
