  • Overview

    The position exists to provide strategic and daily direction to the Packaging Solutions order execution team; has primary accountability for customer satisfaction and achieving profitability parameters.


    The position is designed to accomplish order execution within the required external and internal parameters; timeliness to customer deliverable required dates; adherence to customer technical and commercial specifications; internal profitability goals; and minimization of product, warranty and operating costs, while complying with established ISO and corporate guidelines.


    The general function is that of a critical process owner, the incumbent must integrate traditionally diverse and segregated functions into an effective order fulfillment entity while maintaining adherence to the individual process control aspects of each function.  Other primary roles are: functioning as a change agent by driving process analysis and change to continually improve results; serving as a customer agent and point of contact; controlling all execution priority issues and by functioning as a quality and continuous improvement champion relative to intra and inter-departmental issues.


    Contact with Others


    Although the position demands effective communication with diverse groups, from hourly labor to executive level personnel, it will require frequent contact with senior management and the heads of functional departments within Elliott.  Externally, contacts will include customers, suppliers, ISO 9001 audit personnel relative to compliance, field sales personnel and Elliott agents.   Professional organization contacts include APICS and the Lean Sigma networking group.


    Travel is required on an as-needed basis, but is expected to be local and infrequent.


    • Direct all production control and manufacturing activities to ensure completion of all contract requirements to the customer's satisfaction and within profitability parameters. This entails key aspects of the order execution process and is detailed by the following activities: generation of purchasing and manufacturing signals, issuance and execution of labor orders through final manufacture and prioritization of the manufacturing floor activities.
    • Operate as an agent of change motivating others to continually improve designs and enhance all internal processes in order to reduce product lead time and process cost.
    • Control all priority issues within the process including the following parameters: direction of all schedules, monitoring of timeliness and cost metrics, evaluation of manpower levels versus load levels and overtime requirements.
    • Direct the development of personnel and procedures through training and job exposure to build expertise, depth and flexibility within the organization in order to maximize utility of existing resources.
    • Direct and control the activities, resource requirements and capital expenditures of a multi-functional manufacturing and production control organization.
    • Develop/maintain/integrate all required sub-level systems in order to support order execution activities. i.e. functional planning and monitoring tools to support process metric evaluation.
    • Direct tool enhancements to improve processes in order to execute a higher volume of orders with fewer increases to resources.
    • Develop and maintain a safe and organized work environment.
    • Act as a quality champion: monitoring results, compliance with directives and integrating required corrective actions.
    • Develop and administer budgets, employee performance appraisals and salary plans.
    • Coordinate the maintenance of departmental records and procedures.
    • Perform special projects as directed by superiors.


    Detailed expectations and functions of the position


    Coordinate Store Room delivery and presentation of materials:

    • Create and manage best method for delivery of parts to shop floor:

                   - ensuring parts are delivered at the right time to the right location

                   - minimizing volume of inventory on floor

                   - reducing lost or damaged parts through delivery vehicle, shop floor storage, and fewer parts

                   - ability to have limited parts release to start schedule sensitive projects

                   - identification of parts shortages


    Inventory control of shop floor consumables:

    • Maintain inventory of consumables via Kanban system to make available all necessary materials while minimizing inventory and carrying costs.


    Enhance, manage, and maintain capacity resource planning:

    • Based on backlog and short, medium, and long term forecasts, manage labor resources through headcount, overtime, and cross training skill development. Develop equipment capacity model to monitor bottlenecks and long term capital project planning.


    Capital project requirements planning:

    • Manage capital requirements through forward planning of capacity requirements, improvements to process, and modernizing techniques.


    Develop shop floor scheduling process that improves:

    • product cycle time
    • shop floor flexibility through cross training
    • easier shift hand offs
    • establish of daily objectives and milestones by project


    Maintain and manage safety program and ensure compliance to establish safety rules.  Be leader and example for safety throughout facility.  Solicit and encourage team to participate and improve safety.  Develop means to review success and learn from best practices of others.


    Quality process implementation and maintenance:

    • Aid Quality department in establishing future state of department. Instilling quality mindset in all aspects of production by development of new and better techniques and training.
    • Evaluate outsourcing or in-sourcing opportunities to improve profitability and add to product portfolio. Assist in evaluating current and selecting new outsource suppliers.
    • Manage, maintain, and develop metrics that provide feedback on the performance of the shop floor on a daily, weekly, quarterly, and annual basis. Use metrics to manage operations and develop corrective actions based on negative trends.  Provide feedback to applications on variance to estimates to reduce job cost estimates based on improvements made.



    • Bachelor of Science in Business Administration or Engineering. Other disciplines could be considered.
    • Ten or more (10+) years of experience (including five supervisory) in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
    • Specialized training in various related fields: Production Management, accounting and change methodologies.
    • Intensive functional understanding of the entire order execution process gained by actual on-the-job exposure.
    • Proven proficiency in integrating broadly defined objectives into functional goals and metrics.
    • Demonstrated logistic, analytical and problem solving skills.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including conflict resolution.
    • Experience in negotiations, customer contact and organization dynamics.
    • Knowledge of financial parameters governing company goals.
    • Experience in planning and execution of contracts and major projects.
